How to Restore the Recycle Bin & IE7 Icon to the Desktop

If you have accidentally deleted the Recycle Bin and the Internet Explorer icon from your desktop in Windows, you won't be able to dispose of unneeded files and you will have to create a new Internet Explorer shortcut icon, which doesn't include all the functions of the default icon. There are simple tricks to get your icons back and make your headache go away.

Instructions

      Click on the "Start" button (the button with the Windows icon on it) to open the Start Menu.

      Type "Run" in the Start Search menu selection and click on the "Run" program when it appears on the search list.

      Type "regedit" in the allotted space and click on "OK" or "Enter."

      Navigate to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel" (if you have the default Start Menu) or "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu" (if you use the Classic Start Menu) System Registry key.
      To navigate to these Registry keys, you click on each item in the string of subkeys. For instance, to go to the first key, you'll click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer, HideDesktopIcons, and finally NewStartPanel.

      Right-click on an empty space in the right pane, run your pointer over "New" and a drop-menu will appear. Click on "DWORD (32-bit) Value."

      Name the value "{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}."

      Open the item and set the "Value data" to "0" and click on "OK."

      Create another DWORD (32-bit) value and name it "{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}."

      Set the "Value data" to "0" and click on "OK."

      Close the Registry Editor and refresh the desktop and the Recycle Bin and Internet Explorer icons will appear.

Tips & Warnings

  • The steps above work to restore the Recycle Bin and Internet Explorer icons for Windows XP, and it restores the Internet Explorer icon for Windows Vista. To restore the Recycle Bin in Windows Vista, right-click on an empty space on the desktop and click on "Personalize." Click on "Change desktop icons" in the left pane. Check "Recycle Bin" and click on "Apply" and "OK" and the icon will be back on the desktop.
