How to Add Frames to a Photo in Photoshop CS3

A good way to make a digital photograph more interesting is by creating a digital photo frame for the image in Photoshop CS3. Using this advanced graphics program, you can create digital frames that are colored, patterned, embossed, textured and more. Although there are many different techniques when making a frame in Photoshop, the simplest way is by adjusting the canvas size on the photograph. With the Paint Bucket tool, Noise control and Filter effects in Photoshop CS3, create a great-looking digital frame in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

  1. Frame Selection

    • 1

Go to "File" > "Open" and choose the photograph that will be digitally framed. Hit "OK." The photograph will open up on a new canvas in Photoshop.

    • 2

Navigate to "Select" > "Select All" or hit "Ctrl"-"A." A rectangular marquee will appear around the photograph. Save the selection by going to "Select" > "Save Selection." Name the selection "Frame" and hit "OK."

    • 3

Go to "Image" > "Adjustments" > "Canvas Size." The Canvas Size dialog box will appear. Increase the width and height of the image the number of inches the frame will be. For example, if the image is 5 inches wide by 7 inches tall and you want a two-inch frame, increase the width of the image to 7 inches and the height of the image to 9 inches. Hit "OK."

    • 4

Open the saved selection. Do this by going to "Selection" > "Load Selection." From the Channels drop-down menu, choose "Frame." Hit "OK."

    • 5

Go to "Select" > "Inverse." This will invert the selection so that it creates a frame around the photograph.

    Making the Frame

    • 6

Create a new layer by clicking on the "Create a New Layer" button at the bottom of the Layers palette.

    • 7

Choose a color for the frame from the Color Swatch palette on the right side of the screen. Or double-click on the color swatch in the Tools palette on the left side of the screen to customize the color.

    • 8

Select the Paint Bucket tool from the Tools palette and fill in the "Frame" selection with color on the new layer.

    • 9

Go to "Filter" > "Noise" > "Add Noise." Increase the amount of noise to about 100 percent or more. This will give the frame a speckled look.

    • 10

Navigate to "Filter" > "Filter Gallery." The Filter Gallery dialog will open. Experiment with different filters under "Artistic," "Brush Strokes," "Distort," "Sketch," "Stylize" and "Texture." When satisfied with the filter results, hit "OK."
