How to Convert AVI to Play on iTunes
AVI video files will not open in the iTunes media program. These video files will also not play on any video iPod. To play an AVI file in the Apple software or an iPod portable media player, you will need to convert the file to a compatible format. You can convert the file to a video format that can be viewed on a video iPod or iTunes, or you can extract the AVI's audio and convert it to an audio format that will play on your iPod or in iTunes.

Go to the Media Converter website.

Click "Upload a File." The box on the page will change.

Choose the "Browse" button and a window will appear. Search for and highlight the AVI you want to convert to iTunes in the open window. Click "Open" in the window.

Click "OK" on the Media Converter website. Four new options will be listed.

Select "Go to the next step" and a drop box will show up on the page.

Choose "MP3" in this box if you only want to play the audio from the AVI in iTunes, or "MOV" if you want to watch the full video file in iTunes.

Click "OK" then "Start" on the Web page. A download link will be listed as soon as the AVI has been converted.

Click on the download link to save the converted AVI file on your computer.

Go to the "Convert Files" portion of the Zamzar page.

Click "Browse" then select the AVI file in the window that appears.

Select "iPod" in the Step 2 drop box if you want to watch the AVI video in iTunes. Choose "MP3" if you want to simply listen to the AVI audio.

Type your email address in "Step 3" then click "Convert." When the AVI is converted, an email will be sent to your account.

Open the email and click on the link pasted in that email. A Web page will open. Click the download link positioned on that page to save the converted file.
Add file to iTunes

Open iTunes.

Click "File" at the top of iTunes.

Choose "Add File to Library." A window will open.

Locate the converted AVI file that you saved. Click on that audio or video file then click "Open" to save that file in iTunes. You can then watch/listen to the file in iTunes.
