How to Obtain Medical Assisting Certification with Job Experience
Medical assisting credentials are available from several organizations that offer either certification or registry as a medical assistant. For those who gained on-the-job training as a medical assistant, versus a traditional college degree in the field, credentialing can be obtained with a proven record of three to five years of medical assistant work experience. Both registry and certification credentials require an in-depth written examination to test the knowledge and skill of the candidate. Tips & Warnings
The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) no longer accepts candidates with medical assistant work experience only. A degree in medical assisting is required to sit for the AAMA exam.
Consider a certifying board that offers additional credentialing opportunities, which many complement a medical assistant credential, such as certification as a phlebotomist or electrocardiogram technician.
