How to Run MS DOS From Windows XP

The advent of the Windows operating system made it is easier than ever to run and execute programs without having to learn and memorize lengthy commands or use a confusing text-only interface. However, sometimes it is desirable or even necessary to use the MS DOS command line interface for executing commands within Windows. The command line is particularly useful for troubleshooting program code, network devices and connections. Running the MS DOS command line interface from within Windows XP involves a few easy steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Start menu, which is usually located at the bottom left of your desktop screen. If you have changed themes or moved your taskbar to another location on the screen, then the Start menu button may have moved as well.

    • 2

Select "Run" from the Start menu. This will open a small dialog box where you can type in a command or program name for the system to execute.

    • 3

Type "cmd.exe" into the dialog box and press the "Enter" key. This command tells the operating system to start the executable file "cmd," which is the MS DOS command line window in Windows XP. The run dialog will disappear and the command line window will appear. From there you will be able to execute MS DOS commands.
