How to Get Top Ranking
Obtaining a high ranking in search engines can give your website the benefit of increased amounts of targeted traffic. When a Web surfer types in a keyword phrase, they are more likely to visit the websites that Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines list at the top. The art of optimizing your website to reach the number one ranking in search engines for specific keywords and keyword phrases is known as search engine optimization (SEO for short).

Research and create keywords and keyword phrases. Make a list of the keywords and keyword phrases you would like to include in your website. The keywords should be highly relevant to your site's content. Use Google's keyword tool (see link in Resources) to find relevant keywords if you are running low on ideas. Keep in mind that the more general a keyword is, the harder it is going to be to get a top ranking. For example, it would be much easier to get a top ranking for the keyword phrase "how to teach bulldogs to play fetch," than it would be for the keyword phrase "dog training."

Optimize your website for keywords. Create content for the site that is highly relevant to the keywords people are searching for. For example, if you are trying to rank for the keyword phrase "how to train dogs," create content that teaches the visitor how to train dogs as opposed to content that instructs visitors how to groom their dogs. Include the exact keyword phrase in the title of your content, as well as in the opening sentence of your content. Create subheadings that include the keyword or keyword phrase using the <h1> HTML tag to further increase your chances at a top ranking.

"Backlink" to your website. Backlinking is the process of putting a link to your website on other websites. This tells the search engines that your site contains quality information because other websites are linking back to it. The best places to backlink are on websites that are relevant to the topic of your site. For example, it would be better to create a backlink for a dog training website on another website that focuses on dog training. Use Google search to locate industry-related blogs, and leave a comment for a highly relevant and powerful backlink. Additionally, you can offer to write a guest post on a industry-related blog in exchange for a backlink to your website within the post. Submit your website to social bookmarking websites such as Digg, Reddit, Delicious and Stumble Upon for additional backlinks.

It can take months for your search engine optimization efforts to take full effect. Do not be discouraged if you do not achieve the top ranking overnight.
When backlinking, do not "spam" your link on websites where linking is not welcome. This will not only lead to the website removing your link, but can also have a negative effect on your ranking.
