1
Create a rough overhead sketch of the room you plan to build. Add in the desired locations of walled lighting fixtures, window size and placement, doors and electrical outlets. If possible, measure an existing room that matches the dimensions of the room you'd like to have built, and write those measurements on the sketch.

2
Cut out rough shapes from construction paper of the furniture that will be in the room and arrange the paper furniture the way you'd like. This helps give you a rough estimation of how much extra space you'll have once the furniture is in the room. Label where you place the furniture.

Draw your sketch on the graph paper, using the ruler (or a triangle or T-square) to create straight lines and angles. If not using an existing room's measurements, you can figure the floor space of the new room by multiplying the length of the room by the width of the room. Figure the wall space by multiplying height times the length of each wall.

4
Write your figures down on the graph paper. Measure current electrical sockets and windows if desired, then subtract these individual measurements from the overall wall measurements to determine actual wall space.
