How to Divide Hours for a PMP Application
The Project Management Professional, or PMP, certification is offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). An application proving an individual has completed the prerequisites required by PMI must be completed in order to obtain PMP certification.
Documented professional experience is one of the prerequisites required by PMI for PMP certification. The total amount of professional experience required for PMP certification is dependent on education background.
The following are the requirements for project management experience based on the highest level of education received:
High school diploma, associate degree or global equivalent = 60 months/7,500 hours
Bachelor's degree or global equivalent = 36 months/4,500 hours

1
Access the PMP online application. The experience verification section of the application is where all project management--related hours must be documented and reviewed by PMI in order to obtain the PMP certification.
-
2
Document all hours spent professionally managing projects. Review all of the projects in which you have either led or directed project tasks. The project hours are divided on the task level, and therefore all project management--related tasks can be counted.
-
-
3
Enter professional hours into the online application. All project management work experience must be entered based on the project management process area and task.
-
4
Account for overlapping project hours. Overlapping project hours are not double-counted toward the total number of months of project management experience. For example, if a project manager worked on two projects simultaneously in June and July of a given year, the hours for both projects would count toward the total-hours requirement but would not be counted twice toward the number of consecutive months.
