How to Manage Sites in Dreamweaver 8

You can perform all your necessary web layout and upload work from Dreamweaver without any other additional software.

While Dreamweaver is somewhat intuitive in its user design interface, it doesn't necessarily carry this trait over to the site management aspect. For the most part, you just need to input basic technical details and let Dreamweaver handle the rest. Unless you have a complex site, the default options for site management are all you need to upload your site.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Dreamweaver and navigate to the "Site" category in the menu. For a new site, click "New Site." For an existing site, click "Manage Sites," select the name of the site and click "Edit."

    • 2

Select the "Advanced" tab under the next dialog box and click "Local Info." Enter a site name, such as My New Site. This is used for your reference only. Below, select the local root folder where you stored any files pertaining to your website. For instance, if you have files for a site saved on your hard drive in a folder labeled "My Website," the local root folder path will look like C:\My Website\. Specify the default images folder. In most cases, you should create a folder named "images" under your local root folder for the entire site.

    • 3

Make a link relativity selection, either document-relative or site root-relative. Either way works, but site root-relative links are usually the better option.

    • 4

Enter the web domain address of your site. For example, if your new domain is www.mynewsite.com, the path should look like: "http://www.mynewsite.com/. Check the box below this bar to enable the site cache, as this will save some time when you open the site in Dreamweaver.

    • 5

Navigate to the "Remote Info" category under the "Advanced" tab on the left. Enter FTP as the access for the site and type in the FTP host. In most cases, this is the domain of your website followed by a ".com," or in other words, mynewsite.com. Do not include the "http://www" prefix. You can usually leave the host directory field blank for a basic website.

    • 6

Enter the login details. When you registered your website, you specified a username and password; these are the ones you should put into these fields. Click "Test" to test the connection and ensure that Dreamweaver can upload and download to and from your website.

    • 7

Click "OK" to save your preferences. Unless you have an advanced site and know what you're doing, don't change any of the other defaults in the site management box.
