Instructions

    • 1

Clean the tops of all the wall cabinets with a degreaser spray and some clean rags. Plenty of dust probably will be collected on the tops of your wall cabinets. Measure the width and the length of each cabinet top. You will build a small wood base to mount your crown molding to.

    • 2

Purchase 1-by-2 furring strip material to use for your crown molding to mount to. Cut the furring strips using the chop saw. Use small nails and glue to hold all of the pieces together. You will be building a flat square that will fit flat on top of your cabinet.

    • 3

Nail and glue the square frame to the top of each wall cabinet. Let dry for about one hour. This gives the crown molding a place to attach, instead of attaching it to the cabinet itself.

    • 4

Purchase the crown molding of choice. Use wood, plastic, or decorative. Unfinished trim should be stained or painted before installation on the cabinet. Use paintbrushes or foam brushes and apply the paint or stain. Most trim is already primed, but if not, prime first.

    • 5

Measure each trim piece, taking into account the corners where each piece meets. Cut all cabinet trim at 45-degree angles when meeting in the corners. Use the chop saw for this. The base of the crown molding will attach to the frame you previously installed. Use braid nails and an air nailer or hammer.

    • 6

Apply wood putty to cover any nail holes or joints and lightly sand. Touch up your paint or stain as needed.
