How to Make a Tube Scarf
The tube scarf, or cowl, provides people who brave winter weather with an alternative to traditional scarves. These scarves, which are essentially wide knitted tubes, slip easily over your head and fit comfortably around your neck. They're easy enough for a beginning knitter to make, and they don't require as much yarn as a traditional long scarf.

Instructions

1
Cast on 40 stitches with bulky waste yarn and U.S. size 10 knitting needles.
-
2
Knit 4 rows of garter stitch.
-
-
3
Switch to the bulky yarn with which you will be knitting your tube scarf.
-
4
Begin knitting in pattern; for row 1, knit all the stitches. Always slip the first stitch in each row, counting it as the first knit stitch in the pattern.
-
5
Knit the first 4 stitches in row 2, and purl until only 4 stitches remain. Knit to the end.
-
6
Work all odd-numbered rows like row 1 and all even-numbered rows like row 2. This will yield a stockinette stitch tube scarf with garter stitch edges.
-
7
Continue knitting in the established pattern until the tube scarf measures 30 inches long, ending with an odd-numbered row.
-
8
Cut the yarn with a pair of sharp scissors, leaving a long tail.
-
9
Remove the rows of waste yarn from the cast-on edge. Either pick them out by hand or carefully clip the strands of waste yarn with a pair of sharp scissors.
-
10
Slide the resulting live stitches onto a size 10 knitting needle. Make sure you pick up all 40 stitches.
-
11
Bring the scarf ends together so that the stitches in the garter edging all have purl bumps facing toward the outside of the scarf, and knit stitches facing toward the inside of the fabric.
-
12
Thread the long yarn tail through a tapestry needle, and graft together the ends of your tube scarf.
