How to Install a Wiper Fluid Motor
The wiper fluid motor in your vehicle acts as a pump to distribute windshield wiper fluid through the wiper system and onto the windshield. When this pump fails, you won't be able to spray your windshield with washer fluid. If the washer pump motor sounds strained or it is not spraying properly, this is a clear indication that the motor needs to be replaced. Replacement motors can be purchased from most auto parts stores. This job should take 10 to 15 minutes.
Instructions
-
-
1
Open the hood and loosen the retaining nut on the cable clamp secured to the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench.
-
2
Slide the cable clamp off the terminal.
-
-
3
Slide the windshield washer fluid reservoir up and out of the engine bay. Some vehicles secure the washer fluid reservoir tank using a "tongue and groove" connection where there are no bolts. To remove it, you'll need to pull up on the tank and slide it off the fender or firewall (wherever it is mounted). Some vehicles use bolts to secure the washer fluid reservoir tank. If so, you will need to remove these bolts with a socket wrench and pull up on the reservoir tank to remove it.
-
4
Pull the hose off of the end of the reservoir tank and drain the washer fluid into a catch pan. Some washer fluid pump motors are connected directly to the washer fluid tank with no connecting hose. To remove, you'll need to pull the motor off the tank and drain the washer fluid into a catch pan.
-
5
Unplug the electrical connector that runs to the washer fluid motor.
-
6
Unscrew the bolts that hold the washer fluid motor to the fender or firewall if your motor is not directly connected to the washer fluid tank and pull the motor out of the engine bay. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts.
-
7
Connect the factory electrical connector to the washer fluid motor.
-
8
Mount the new motor to the washer fluid tank or reconnect the washer fluid tank hose to the motor.
-
9
Mount the washer fluid motor to the fender or firewall if applicable and tighten the mounting bolts with a socket wrench.
-
10
Reinstall the washer fluid tank. Installation is the reverse of removal.
-
11
Reconnect the battery cable to the negative battery terminal and tighten the nut on the clamp with a socket wrench.
-
12
Open the cap on the reservoir tank and fill it with the washer fluid collected in the catch pan.
