How to Etch Mugs
Whether you are looking for a great way to personalize a gift or simply trying to spice up your dishes, consider etching a design onto a mug. Mug etching is something you can do by yourself or enjoy with your entire family. You can create small, intricate designs or larger and simple symbols. Etching can take a little practice, though, so you may want to test out your etching abilities on some spare glass before you attempt the mug.

1
Sketch a design onto a piece adhesive paper. Adhesive paper peels off a stiff backing, much like a sticker. Hold the paper against your mug to see if it will fit. You may need to resize the design if it is too large for the mug.
-
2
Cut the design out using a craft knife. Stick to the original sketch to the best of your abilities. Peel the adhesive paper off its backing and press the adhesive side of the paper to your mug. Smooth down the adhesive paper against your mug without making bubbles or wrinkles.

3
While wearing rubber gloves, spread the etching cream over the glass and adhesive paper. Stay inside the lines as much as possible to keep the shape of your sketch. Lay the etching cream on thickly for the best results.
-
4
Wait 15 minutes before wiping away the etching cream with a paper towel. Do not spread the etching cream over any areas that you do not want etched. Wash any remaining etching cream off your gloves.
-
5
Peel the adhesive paper off the mug carefully. Move slowly so you do not accidentally leave any adhesive on the mug. Use a utility knife to gently remove any remaining scraps or small pieces of adhesive paper. Throw the adhesive paper and paper towels away. Do not attempt to reuse the adhesive paper cutout.

Tips & Warnings
If you are an etching beginner, start with large and simple designs before trying anything too intricate.
Do not let etching cream drip on to anything but the glass you want to etch. Loose etching cream can scratch floors, tables and counters. If any spills, blot it up with a paper towel instead of wiping; wiping will only spread the grainy cream and cause more scratching.
Do not let etching material come in contact with your skin. If contact occurs, wash skin immediately.
Eye protection is recommended.
