How to Turn on a Soldering Torch
Soldering makes strong and long-lasting connections for copper pipe, electrical connections and jewelry. After heating the metal to be bonded, the solder melts on it to make a bond. You can heat the metal with either a soldering iron or a torch that uses propane for larger applications, or butane for smaller, more intricate connections. The lighting procedures for any gas torch require only a few simple steps to get them turned on and ready. You have an option of using a torch igniter, matches or a cigarette lighter.
Things You'll Need
- Soldering torch, butane or propane
- Igniting device, igniter, cigarette lighter or matches
Instructions
-
-
1
Point the nozzle of the torch away from anything flammable.
-
2
Turn on the gas until you can hear it escaping. Listen closely. Usually a quarter or half turn will be enough.
-
-
3
Light the gas with the igniter. If you have a torch igniter, squeezing the handles creates a spark. Just point the nozzle into the cup of the igniter and squeeze the handles. With the cigarette lighter, just point the nozzle into the flame. With matches, you may need to set the torch down or have someone hold the torch or light the match.

4
Adjust the gas control for a flame appropriate for your work.

Tips & Warnings
Standard brass torches are easy to light and relatively inexpensive. Some more expensive soldering torches are self-igniting. Simply pull the trigger and the torch ignites. If you use it every day, you may prefer this.
Always read and keep the instruction manual for any torch you buy.
