How to Insulate Around a Door
In the wintertime, it is important to make sure your home is adequately insulated from the cold weather. If not, cold air could enter your home, keeping the temperature low and your energy bills high. One of the biggest culprits of air flow to the outside is an exterior door. In order to make sure your home is insulated, you need to make sure all doors are properly insulated against the weather. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Scissors
- Door sweep which is wider than the door
- Drill
- Screws
- Adhesive weather-stripping
Instructions

1
Measure the width of the door using the tape measure. Transfer that measurement to the door sweep.
-
2
Cut the door sweep to match the width of the door with the scissors. Slide the top of the door sweep on the bottom of the door.
-
-
3
Drill four evenly spaced holes on both sides of the bottom of the door through the door slide. Place screws in these holes and screw the door slide to the door.
-
4
Open the door. Measure the width of the top and the height of the sides of the door jamb. Cut three pieces of the adhesive weather-stripping (one for the top and one for each side) with the scissors.
-
5
Peel off the back of the adhesive stripping. Fasten the stripping to the top of the door jamb by placing one end in the corner closest to the door hinge and pressing it against the top of the jamb. Work your way to the other side, making sure you are pressing hard enough for it to stick.

6
Repeat Step 5 for the sides of the door. Make sure to start at the top corner and work your way to the bottom.

Tips & Warnings
For even more protection, you can add a door brush to the bottom of the door. This is a small piece of plastic which helps keep a greater amount of air from passing through any cracks on the bottom. However, for this addition, you may need to shorten the door so it can fit.
Make sure to get insulation which will still allow for a nice tight close of your door. If the stripping is too thick, the door won't close properly and you may still get air flow into the house.
