How to Fix Tangled Seat Belts

Seat belts very often mean the difference between life and death in a crash. Wearing your seat belt properly will help to keep you safe. According to Everydayhealth.com, seat belts work by restraining your hips and shoulders. They keep you from being thrown from the vehicle during an accident, restrain your body during the rapid change in speed, evenly distribute the force of the impact and protect your brain and spinal cord. Not only should you wear your seat belt, you should also make sure that the belt is properly working. If your seat belt is tangled up, it might not be as effective in an accident. Whenever your seat belt tangles, take the time and effort to fix it.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the bolt (normally a 14 millimeter bolt) located under the seat belt retractor.

    • 2

Pull off the seat belt cover.

    • 3

Pull the seat belt all the way out. Sewn into the very end of the seat belt is a plastic bar. This holds the belt securely in the seat belt spool. Remove this plastic bar so you can completely detach the belt.

    • 4

Hold the seat belt tightly so it doesn't retract.

    • 5

Untwist and unwind the belt until it is perfectly straight.

    • 6

Pull the seat belt back through the spool and slide the plastic bar through the sewn-in loop. When the plastic bar is replaced, slowly release the seat belt so it can wind onto the spool.

    • 7

Replace the cover over the seat belt and screw in the bolt.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a good time to clean the seat belt, if necessary. Simply add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to 1 cup of water in a small bucket. Run the cleaning solution up and down the length of the seat belt with a sponge.
