How to Create County Maps
Explore the boundaries, shape and cities within your county by making a personal, handcrafted map. You can use resources from around your house, such as paper and scissors, but you might also have to do a little exploring in state atlases, through online map sites and perhaps even in your public library. If you are using this art project as a way to teach children about the counties in their state, consider assigning a different county to each child.

1
Print a county map template from a free map website such as Google Maps. You also can do an online search for your specific county, but make sure to include the word "map" in the search box along with the name of the county. Once you have pulled up your county map on your computer screen, you can print the map.

2
Cut out your map template with a pair of scissors. Then trace the shape of the county with a pencil onto the sheet of card stock. Retrace the line with a bolder color, such as a black or blue marker. You also can glue the template directly onto your card stock sheet; in this case, simply swipe the back of the template with a glue stick and press onto the card stock.

Add cities, rivers, mountain ranges and other geographic attributes to your county map with a pen or several different colored markers. Make sure you write in small fonts if you are including a vast amount of information. When customizing your county map, you might want to think of the information that will be most valuable to you, such as major roads, major cities and attractions, and distinct topographic areas.
