1
Clean the brick of dirt, cobwebs or soot. Simply take a damp cloth and wipe down the entire fireplace. This will take some doing if you have a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace. It doesn't need to be perfect, just free of large dirt or dust particles.

2
Cover stains and soot, using a paintbrush and oil-based primer. This is also important because brick tends to suck up a lot of paint, so you can save money on paint by adding a good coat of primer before painting. Let dry completely before painting.

Paint the newly primed floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace with latex paint of your color choice. The paint roller you use should be designed for textured areas. Use a paintbrush to get into the mortar areas between the bricks. Let the paint dry before repeating.

Apply more paint. The brick will probably need two or three coats of paint before it starts to look great.
