1
Study the handicap. In football betting the spotting of points to a favored team makes the process more dynamic. For example, if the Indianapolis Colts had a home game against the Detroit Lions who they were considered far superior to a straight up bet would seem easy to choose. However in football betting a line is given which is a head start to the underdog team. If in this game the Colts were a 10.5 point favorite the fixture would read Detroit Lions (+10.5) at Indianapolis Colts (-10.5). This would make the betting more difficult. If the final score was Colts 30 Lions 20, the Colts would win the game but not cover the 10.5 start gifted to the Lions. The sports books' score would be Colts 30 Lions 30.5 and those betting on the Lions would win. To win this bet, you would need the Colts to win the game by 11 points or more. It is important to study the line of each game and weigh it against how comfortably you think your favorite will win the game. Avoid big lines and try to find teams you think will win who are giving up few points or even spotted a head start to bet successfully.

2
Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each team. Will they cancel out each other's strengths or will the strengths of one team be magnified making them a bigger favorite in your opinion, and on the sports books? For example if the Colts lead the league in rushing, and they played the Lions who had a weak run defense, this may impact how big they will win.

Keep up to date with injury news. The NFL discloses injury reports weekly on their official website. Injuries to starters who play in key positions such as quarterback, running back, or wide receiver can impact the outcome of a game.

4
Decide whether the situation of a game could impact the motivation of a team. Late in a season, you may see a team who has already clinched a playoff berth and potentially resting starters run into a team on the edge of the playoff race fighting for its life. In this case you may weigh the situation over the respective win loss records to bet successfully.
