How to Crochet Adult Size Leg Warmers

Legwarmers first came out in the 1980s and make a small comeback every few years. These knitted or crocheted tubes are worn over tights or socks to keep the lower legs warm. They can be easily made by someone with moderate crochet skills. These fashion icons can be created in staid black or white, like the originals dancers wore, or in a wild array of colorful stripes for that 80s-throwback look.

Instructions

    • 1

With the base color yarn and the H hook, chain 30. Slip stitch the two ends of the chain together to make a circle. Take care that the chain is straight and does not become twisted.

    • 2

Chain two. Continuing on the same direction without turning, single crochet in every chain in the circle. When you reach the beginning of your single crochets, slip stitch in the chain-two spot.

    • 3

Continue in the same direction without turning. Chain two, then single crochet around the circle. Slip stitch in the chain-two space. Repeat this row four more times. You will have created a ring of single crochet, six rows high.

    • 4

Change to the I hook. Chain two, then do one half-double crochet in each single crochet. Slip stitch in the chain-two spot.

    • 5

Chain two, half-double crochet in each stitch around the circle and slip stitch in the chain two spot.

    • 6

Continue doing half-double crochet rows until the leg warmer is as tall as you want it to be. Most leg warmers are worn scrunched on the leg, so make sure to crochet extra length for this style.

    • 7

Finish the leg warmer by doing six rows of single crochet instead of half-double crochet. When the sixth row is finished, cut the yarn, fasten off and weave the end in to hide it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Striped leg warmers can be made by randomly changing yarn color at any place in the construction process. Stripes can be in two alternating colors or a random rainbow collection.

  • For people with sturdier calves, measure the initial chain around the calf. If it does not fit without stretching, add a few more chains until it is long enough. Proceed as directed.
