How to Obtain Church Grants

Churches provide a valuable service to society. They help the poor, promote social justice issues and provide a sense of community. Determine the needs of the church and parish. Maybe your church needs to build a new addition, start a homeless shelter or needs recreational supplies to start a youth group. Chances are, whatever your church needs, there will be a grant for it.

Get on the Internet and begin your search. The Christian Grants website charges for its listing, but it is kept updated and current. You might also find that there are social service agencies in your own hometown with grant money to spare.

If your church has absolutely no money, go to your local library. They have many books, articles and databases that can help your church find money. Also, there are many books out there to help churches find money and are probably available at your local library. Some of the newer ones are "Faith-Based Grants: Aligning Your Church to Receive Abundance" by Beverly A. Browning and "Start and Grow Your Faith-Based Nonprofit: Answering Your Call in the Service of Others" by Jill Esau and Stanley W. Carlson-Thies.

Make sure your church has a 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service. Many organizations will ask for proof of your non-profit status before they will give you money. If your church does not have this, obtain Form 1023 and Publication 557 (detailed instructions) from your local IRS office.

Prepare and submit the documentation requested by the grant. You will likely have to provide financial records, substantiation of the need of the gift and written approval of your church's governing board for the project.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take a grant writing class to learn the basics. The competition is fierce and these classes can give you an edge. Make sure you follow the grant guidelines and submit your proposal on time.

  • Don't forget the members in your congregation. They may work for a potential grant giver or know someone who does.

Thank you for this article. I thought about writing a grant for a small church that I support and just waiting for the 501(c)(3).
