How to Exercise a Small Dog
Small dogs make great companions for children and adults of all ages, and just like humans, dogs need exercise to keep them healthy. Small dogs are prone to obesity and joint problems due to their small stature, and a few pounds can be the difference between a healthy dog and a seriously ill dog. Beginning an exercise regimen and maintaining a daily activity routine will ensure that your small dog will be with you for many years to come.

1
Avoid feeding your small-breed dog immediately before any strenuous physical activity. This could lead to stomach twisting and pain. Wait at least one hour after a meal to begin exercise.
-
2
Offer your small-breed dog water during exercise.
-
-
3
Take your dog for a daily walk. This should begin at four months of age. Young dogs cannot walk for extended periods of time and should be taken for two to three shorter walks during the day.
-
4
Play fetch, both indoors and outdoors. Remember that these shorter statured dogs will not be able to jump very high, so throwing a ball or chew toy a foot or two in the air is adequate.
-
5
Exercise your dog's brain as well as his body by playing hide and seek games. Place a treat underneath an overturned bowl and allow the dog to figure out how to retrieve his reward.
-
6
Swim with your dog and the entire family. Swimming is an excellent way for overweight, small dogs to exercise because they move easily in the water.
-
7
Exercise your small-breed puppy right before bed. This will ensure that the puppy is exhausted when it is time to place him in a designated sleeping area.
