Instructions

    • 1

Clean surface dirt, dust and debris off the treadle sewing machine. Remove the machine head from the cabinet via bolts, pins or hinges at the rear of the machine. Remove the treadle base from the cabinet as well.

    • 2

Tape off any details or trim you do not want to paint or damage with chemical paint stripper. Use painter's tape, folding and cutting as necessary to create clean and neat edges.

    • 3

Apply chemical paint stripper to the surface of the treadle sewing machine, as well as to the treadle and pulley hardware. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for stripper and paint removal. Rub the surfaces down well with fine steel wool after you remove the stripper and paint to create a clean and even finish for the paint.

    • 4

Spray auto-body base coat lightly and evenly over the sewing machine. Apply base coat to the pedal and pulley hardware as well. Allow this layer to dry thoroughly before proceeding.

    • 5

Paint the sewing machine with several thin coats of auto-body paint in the color of your choice. Do the same for the treadle pedal. Allow the paint to dry completely.Add paint details and accents using auto body touch-up paint or decals to add style and personality to your treadle sewing machine.

    • 6

Top coat the sewing machine and treadle with a clear finish. Choose a matte or shiny top coat as you prefer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the time to properly clean and oil the mechanical workings of the sewing machine before you paint.

  • Wear a mask and gloves when handling stripper and auto-body painting supplies. Be sure to always work in an area with adequate ventilation.
