How to Print Large Templates

Unless you have a plotter that can print poster-size or larger documents, printing a large template has to be condensed or printed through a process called tiling. Doing that and single sheet printing is easy enough though, especially when using two different Microsoft Office document programs, which allow this printing format for drawings or banners larger than a standard 8.5-inch x 11-inch sheet of paper.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Visio software
  • Microsoft Publisher, any edition after 2003
  • Printer/plotter capable of printing paper larger than 8.5 x 11 inches
  • Printer paper larger than 8.5 x 11 inches
  • Tape or glue

Instructions

  1. Printing a Large Drawing

    • 1

Open Microsoft Visio, which is located on your Windows desktop. Select "File" and "Open" to get the drawing you created on the screen.

    • 2

Select "File" again. Next, select "Page Setup" and then select the "Print Setup" tab.

    • 3

Look for a box that allows you to change the paper size. Choose the paper size you want and click "OK," then select "File" and "Print." Know that if you want to print on much larger sheets of paper than what's available, you have to select the particular printer or plotter you'll be using in Visio's printing menu.

    • 4

Select the printer or plotter that uses larger paper sizes by clicking "File," "Page Setup" and the "Print Setup" tab once again. Click "Setup" under the option for the printer paper.

    • 5

Click "Printer" under the Printer Setup box, then "Name." Select the printer or plotter on the list, and click "OK" to activate it.

    • 6

Go back to the "Print Setup" tab and use the alignment feature to align your drawing in the center of the page vertically and horizontally. Select "Preview" to see what the print will look like once it's printed.

    • 7

Click "File" and "Print" to print your large drawing.

Printing a Large Document Using Tiling

    • 8

Print your document using the tiling method where one document can be printed in sections on multiple pieces of paper that can be assembled together later.

    • 9

Open Microsoft's Visio. Click "File," "Page Setup" and the "Print Setup" tab. Select the printer paper size you are using to print the document.

    • 10

Use the preview feature in the Print Setup box this time to align the template with the paper size. Visio will automatically preview your document with multiple squares inside to indicate the tiling effect and the sections that will print on separate sheets of paper.

    • 11

Click "OK," then print the document. Assemble the separate printed pages together later with tape or glue.

    Printing a Banner

    • 12

Open Microsoft Publisher from your desktop. Select "File," then "New" and the New Publications task window opens. On the New Publications task window, select "Publications for Print," then click "Banners."

    • 13

Search the preview gallery and select the banner you want to print by clicking on it.

    • 14

Make adjustments to the banner. In the New Publication task window, select your adjustments for width and height. You can also change the colors of your banner using the Color Schemes option, or any fonts you used in the Font Schemes option. In addition, you can also change any of the text or photos in the template.

    • 15

Click "File," then "Print" to print the banner. Make sure your printer is capable of accommodating large formats.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider taking a large document and reducing it to fit on one page. This option is available on most Microsoft document programs, such as Word, Visio and Publisher. To do this, simply click on "Page Setup" on your File menu, then click the "Print Setup" tab. On the "Print Setup" tab, locate the "Print Zoom" option, select "Fit to" and type a "1" in each box. Print the document, and it will print out on one page in a reduced format.

  • Microsoft's 2003 edition of Publisher doesn't support printing in large formats.
