How to Defragment an iMac Computer
Windows-based PC users are usually familiar with the maintenance task of defragmenting their hard drive. Defragmenting, also known as file optimization, locates fragmented files in the computer and puts them back together to improve efficiency and function. Unlike in Windows, Mac OS X does not include a defragmentation option in its disk utility. This is because, for most iMac and other Macintosh computer users, it is unnecessary to defragment the hard drive. The OS X operating system eliminates most of the things that cause file fragmentation. However, users who work with very large files or have full computer disks can employ third-party software to defragment their iMac computer.
