How to Set Up a Wireless WEP

Encryption is always important for setting up a router. WEP is one of several options for encrypting the wireless signal for your wireless router. Out of the many different encryption methods, WEP offers the most accessibility, allowing most wireless-capable devices to connect to your router without worrying that they will be incompatible. However, you will first need to configure WEP on your router.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Web browser on your PC.

    • 2

Enter your router's IP address into the address bar. Usually the IP address is 192.168.1.1, but if that doesn't work, refer to your router's manual for the IP address.

    • 3

Enter your usename and password when prompted to enter the router's settings. If this is the first time the router is being accessed, use "admin" as both the username and password. If that doesn't work, refer to your owner's manual for the username and password to use.

    • 4

Go to the security settings of your router. You can usually find them along the top of the router site.

    • 5

Choose "WEP" from the encryption types listed.

    • 6

Choose a password and click the button to generate the WEP codes. This should make the page refresh and display a series of numbers, usually around four or five.

    • 7

Record the numbers that appear. You will need these numbers to connect wireless devices to your network.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any of the numbers that appear will allow you to connect.
