How to Disable Yahoo Chat and Mobile Text
No matter how much you want to read your Yahoo! e-mails, if the Yahoo! Chat & Mobile Text feature is activated, you will not be able to do so until it is done loading. This new feature in Yahoo! Mail can be annoying because it takes a long time to load--especially if you have a lot of contacts in your address book, as Yahoo! will open a mobile chat window for each contact who has a Yahoo! account. There are a couple of ways to disable Yahoo! Chat & Mobile Text.

Open Yahoo! Mail. Sign into your account.

Click "Options" in the upper-right corner of your Yahoo! Mail page. Choose "Mail Options."

Click "General" on the left side of the page.

Click to deselect the check box option "Enable Connection-related features (Messages, Suggestions, Updates)."

Click the "Save" button. This will disable any updates, messages or suggestions by Yahoo! Mail including the Yahoo! Chat & Mobile Text feature.
Shut Yahoo! Chat & Mobile Text Off

Open Yahoo! Mail. Sign into your account.

Click the down arrow next to the words "I am" in the Yahoo! Chat & Mobile Text window to the left of the screen. Choose "Sign out of chat." This will turn off Yahoo! Chat & Mobile Text.

Click "Hide" next to Chat & Mobile Text. Yahoo! Mail will remember your settings and hide the Chat & Mobile Text box every time you sign in.

Options is in the top left corner first off. Second the there is no way to permanently disconnect from Yahoo IM from the messager options.

My yahoo email has been compromised via the "chat" or "mobile" text features, which resulted in SPAM being sent in my name. Twice... I think I've fixed the problem by disabling updates, clearing out my address book, and changing my password and other account options. If you think this has happened to you, check your "recent logins" in your account. You should see your IP address or location for your ISP. If you see anything like "United Arab Emerites" or "Trinidad and Tobago" in the LOCATION field, then they got you too... YMMV... Email that _I_ compose and send with have a signature block with 3 quotations and in the near future will include a PGP digital signature as well. The spam sent is missing the signature block since it came in via someone, somehow, hacking the yahoo mobile feature to use my account through SMS text messaging. I do not have a mobile phone. I do not use or send text messages. Change your passwords just to err on the safe side...
