How to Replace Hatchback Struts

On a hatchback car, the rear hatch opens and closes to reveal the entire back half of the automobile. But a hatch can be very heavy, and is supported by two shock absorber-like struts, which take the load of the hatch and keep it open. The problem is, when those struts malfunction, it is extremely difficult to hold open the hatch, which can become quite cumbersome. The malfunctioning hatchback strut(s) will need to be changed.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Broom
  • Beach towel
  • Replacement hatch struts
  • Open-end wrench set

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the towel into a 1-foot square and place in near the hatch of the car. Pop the hatch and lift it up as high as you can. Place the folded towel on top of the handle of the broom and set the hatch down on the towel, so that it's supported and you can work underneath it freely.

Place the flathead screwdriver between the clip on the end of the strut and the ball on the end of the strut, and gently twist the screwdriver to release the clip. Once it pops out, pull off the strut from the hatch mount. Repeat this process on the other end of the strut. If you have a strut that's held in place by a nut on one end, undo the nut using an open-end wrench.

    • 3

Push the replacement struts onto the mounts and push the clips into place, locking the strut down. Repeat the process on the other side, then remove the broom and make sure that the hatch stays open.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another good tool to use to pop off the tabs of a strut is a cotter pin puller. The sharp point on the end makes it easy to pop off the clip, and the bend in the end makes it easier to twist it, as well.

  • Make sure the hatch is sufficiently supported before you replace one of the struts. If the broom and towel won't cut it, have an assistant hold it in place, so that you don't get injured.
