How to Test a 56K Modem

When the Internet first became popular among the civilian population, all connections were made via the use of dial-up Internet; 56K (56 kilobits per second) connections, utilizing modems of the same name, rapidly became the most widespread. In the last decade, broadband Internet has become available in most areas, so most people have moved on from dial-up connections to broadband Internet. However, 56K connections are still in use, as they cost considerably less to subscribe to than do broadband internet connections.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the phone line you are using for your dial-up connection is unoccupied. You will not be able to use your phone line to dial into the Internet so long as somebody is making use of it for other purposes.

    • 2

Click on the "Start" menu in the lower-left hand of the screen. This will open the "Start" menu.

    • 3

In the "Start" menu, scroll your cursor over the text entitled "Connect To." This will expand the "Connect To" menu.

    • 4

In the "Connect To" menu, click on "Show All Connections" to open the "Network Connections" window.

    • 5

In the "Network Connections" window, click on the text entitled "Create New Connection." This will open the "Connection Wizard" window.

    • 6

      Press the "Next" button.

    • 7

Select "Create a connection to the network at your office" and click on the "Next" button.

    • 8

Select "Dial-up connection" and click on "Next" once more.

    • 9

In the text box, write the name by which you'd like the connection to be identified. This name is arbitrary; it will not have any effect upon the connection itself. When you are finished, click "Next." You will have been given a phone number for dialing into your Internet by your Internet service provider. In the text box, type that phone number. Then click on "Next."

    • 10

      Click on "Finish."

    • 11

Click on the "Start" menu once more, and again scroll your cursor over "Connect To." In the menu that appears, find your connection and click on it. This will open up the proper window.

    • 12

In this new window, type the username and password given to you by your Internet service provider. Select the option you'd like so far as concerns saving the password in the computer. When you are finished with this, click on "Dial." This will attempt to dial into your internet. If you successfully connect to the Internet, then your modem and your internet service are functioning properly. If not, then contact your Internet service provider for more assistance.
