How to Reduce your Consumption of Processed Foods
One of the most effective ways for you to improve your overall health, as well as the nature of your existing diet, is to reduce your consumption of foods that contain excess calories, sugar, sodium, fat and toxic preservatives and additives. Frozen dinners, chips, sugary breakfast cereals and canned foods are among the culprits. Once you say goodbye to junk food and let fresh, unprocessed foods into your diet, you'll feel and look better.

1
Study the Food Pyramid. Fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products are just some of the healthy foods located at the bottom. The least healthy foods, including chocolate bars, cookies and candy, are on top. Make sure that the foods you find at the bottom of the Pyramid go on your grocery list.

2
Create a shopping path that sticks to the inside perimeter of your local grocery store. You are more likely to find the fruits, vegetables, fresh seafood, diet fruit juices, plant-based oils and whole-grain products you need here than in the center aisles.

3
Read the Nutrition Facts labels on the foods you want to purchase. Phase out processed foods in your diet by avoiding foods labeled with high levels of MSG, trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, sodium nitrate and other unhealthy ingredients.

Make meals at home, including snacks, salads and desserts. Restaurant food contains a lot of flavorings and preservatives. By preparing meals yourself, you are making a conscious effort to cut out processed food from your diet. You're in complete control of the types of food you put into your body.
