How to Convert Flash Video Files to Windows Media Player Format

Flash and Windows Media are among the most popular computer digital video formats used today. Both formats are used to stream video on the web and play video clips on mobile video devices. Unfortunately, some older versions of Windows Media Player will not recognize flash video (FLV) files. If you use Windows Media Player as your primary tool to view and manage video clips, the ability to convert FLV files to Windows Media Video (WMV) will allow previous versions of Windows Media Player to continue to manage all your video resources.

Tips & Warnings

  • Default settings for most software assume you want to keep the original size and frame rates used in the source file. If you want to change the size of the source file, configure the software manually. You can decrease the size of the original file, but you cannot increase the size without a substantial loss of quality. Large source files take longer to download and may not be suitable for streaming on the Internet. The conversion software will also allow you to adjust the bitrate, or data bandwidth used by the encoded file. A lower bitrate will result in a smaller, more easily streamed video file. Higher video quality can be achieved using higher bitrates.
