How to Format a Header for a Two-Page Resume

The amount of professional experience and education you have should dictate the length of your resume. Although the rule of thumb has typically been to limit your resume no more than one page, this is not realistic for all job seekers. Entry-level professionals may be able to fit all of their information on one page, while someone with several years of experience will need more space. If it is necessary for your resume to run longer than one page, it is important to label the second page (and any additional pages). This allows employers who are receiving multiple resumes for one position to keep your paperwork together while also showing that you are highly organized.

Instructions

Find a natural break in your resume to begin your second page. It is fine to break in the middle of a section, but you should not break up sentences within one job description or one educational listing. The page that ends your resume should be at least one-third full of type.

    • 2

Add the header on your second page until you have fully completed your resume, not before. This will save time and help you choose the best placement for your header.

    • 3

Select a method for adding your header. If your word processing program allows you to add automatic headers to appear at the top of each page, feel free to use this method. However, you should choose the option in your header formatting menu to not include the header on your first page. It is not necessary, because you have all of your contact listed at the top of your first page. Include your name and "Resume Page 2" in your header.

If you do not have or do not wish to use the automatic header option, then you may simply type your name and "Resume Page 2" at the top of your second page. Left-justify your header and leave several line spaces below it before the rest of your resume starts.

Make your header stand out. Use a font size that is one size larger than the body type you used throughout the rest of your resume. Bold and/or italicize the header as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your resume runs more than two pages, use a "Page __ of __" format to guide readers through your document. Executive-level professionals are typically the only job seekers who will need more than two pages for their resume.
