How to Earn Your Law Degree by Clerking

Law clerking is an important and necessary step towards earning your law degree. You can become a law clerk with less of a degree than you would need to become an actual lawyer. Through clerking, you can earn credits and experience that will make getting your degree easier. Clerking can be a viable step towards and path for your law degree.

Instructions

    • 1

Finish an associate's degree in paralegal studies. This usually takes only two years and is not as time consuming as getting a law degree. It will also allow you to be eligible to get a clerk job.

    • 2

Apply for a clerking job using your associate's degree or paralegal degree. You should be able to choose from several different clerking jobs, as there are always plenty available at local firms. Be advised that some jobs are only temporary, but that all jobs will lead in the same direction.

    • 3

Do everything that you are asked at your clerking job. Finish all of the tasks that you are assigned, and attempt to move forward in a clerking career.

    • 4

Ask to sit in on as many cases as possible, even't if you aren't assigned to them. Use your lunch hour and free time to read extra case briefs, discuss cases with other lawyers and research cases that are currently being tried by your firm.

    • 5

Apply to get your law degree through an online school or through a school that has classes on nights or weekends. This will allow you to keep your clerking job.

    • 6

Speak to advisors, during the application process, about how your clerking job can count towards some of the degree requirements in your law degree program.

    • 7

Test out of any courses that you can test out of through the knowlege that you have gained in your paralegal degree and through clerking.

    • 8

Excel at classes so you can finish them quickly and easily through the information you've learned in your clerking job. This will allow your degree to be awarded sooner.
