How to Paint the Rim of a Pool
Painting the rim, more commonly known as coping, of a pool can be accomplished with the water in the pool, but is considerably easier with an empty pool. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Check with your local pool supply store for a paint that is compatible with the chemicals in the water and that will stick to the aluminum coping of the pool. Most pool supply stores will carry the coping paint in spray cans. As an alternative you can use a brush but the spray cans are faster and provide a smoother finish.
Pool paint comes in three different types--epoxy, rubber based and acrylic latex. The latex will adhere to any of the three whereas the first two will only adhere to themselves so if you don't know what kind of paint you have, it is probably best to use the acrylic latex.
-
2
Mask the side of the pool using masking tape--not duct tape--and newspaper.
-
-
3
Tape off the pool deck along the perimeter of the pool coping.
-
4
Use a tarp or piece of plastic to cover the pool floor under the section you are working on.
-
5
Start at one corner of the pool and move around until it is all painted. Standing in the shallow sections will allow for better control of the paint. Deeper areas will require a ladder or you will have to bend over the edge of the pool to paint the underside of the coping.
-
6
Remove the masking tape and newspaper from the pool.

7
Pick out your paint as described in Step 1 above. Mask off the pool deck along the perimeter of the coping using masking tape.
-
8
Kneeling on the pool deck, paint the top of the coping using a paint brush.
-
9
Get in the water and paint the coping on the shallow end with a paint brush. Carefully paint the bottom of the coping so as not to get paint on the wall of the pool. Paint in front of your body as you move backwards so that you don't touch the fresh paint. Move slowly to avoid stirring up waves that might hit the coping.
-
10
Paint the deep areas wearing a flotation device. Hold onto the pool deck with one hand and paint with the other, again painting in front of your body while you move backwards.
-
11
Remove the masking tape from the pool deck.

Tips & Warnings
Most paint stores sell a handle that attaches to standard spray paint cans and allows you to squeeze a handle with your hand to activate the spray can. This is more comfortable than pressing down with your index finger to activate the spray can.
Try and paint your coping when you replace your pool liner.
Painting while in the water can be dangerous. Have a partner to help you by moving the paint can for you and keep an eye out in case you need help getting out of the water.
