How to Use a Hand Miter Box Saw

A hand miter box and a saw is used to cut precision angles in hard to saw pieces of wood such as crown molding.   • Back saw
  • Molding
  • Lumber crayon

Instructions

      Measure your molding and determine exactly where it needs to be cut.

      Mark your desired length with a lumber crayon.

      Place the molding in your box and line up the mark you made with your lumber crayon with the slot you desire to use.

      Hold the molding securely up against the back of the miter box with one hand while cutting with your other.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sawing is not easy with a miter box. Try making your first movement of the saw towards you, or "back".

  • Miter boxes are easier to handle if you secure them to your work bench with a couple of wood screws.
