How to Sand Lap Siding

Two types of siding are found on homes older than 100 years: lap siding and cedar shake. Cedar shake siding is cut pieces of cedar that are nailed to the side of the house in two layers to create a weather-resistant covering. Lap siding is the siding that most modern vinyl siding is designed after. Lap siding is more common because it lasts longer and is easier to care for than cedar shake. The only setback with lap siding is the need to paint the siding to keep it properly protected and looking new. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Layout the large tarps under the area of siding ready for sanding. The large tarps make clean up easier when the sanding is done. The tarps can be taped to the side of the house to help the paint and dust hit the tarps.

    • 2

Use the paint scraper to remove any loose paint chips. The paint scraper may not remove all the loose paint. Do not use the corner or hard edge of the scraper; this will scar the wood.

    • 3

Hold the sander so the edge is parallel with the lap of the siding. The belt sander will change the shape of the siding if held on one spot for too long.

    • 4

Place the sander on the siding and squeeze the trigger or switch. The belt sander will remove large amounts of paint and wood fast. Do not over-sand the siding. Do not turn the sander on the edge.

    • 5

Sand the corners and bottom edges of the laps with the detail sander. The detail sander will remove the paint and other debris slower than the belt sander, but with less potential for damage. The belt sander can be used by an experienced person to sand the bottoms of the laps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Finer sand paper will take longer to sand, but give a smoother finish.

  • Remember to fill any holes and sand before repainting.

  • Start at the top of each section and work down.

  • Dust masks will help to prevent dust and paint chips from going into the workers mouth and lungs.

  • The belt sander can change the shape and size of the siding if left running in one spot for too long.

  • Use caution when operating power tools.

  • Use caution when working from a ladder
