How to Become an Airline Customer Service Agent

Airline customer service agents are placed in one of two groups: reservations agents and passenger service agents. Reservations agents usually work in large offices, interacting with customers over the phone and passenger service agents interact with customers in person at airport terminals at the ticket counter or at the boarding gate. No minimum educational requirements are required for this position, however many individuals choose to attend post-secondary to gain essential skills.

      Take several courses in high school related to this position, if possible. Some suggested courses include English, business, computers, career development and tourism. These courses will help provide you with the foundation you'll need.

      Obtain post-secondary education, if you would like. Airline customer service agents usually only need at least a high school diploma but you many choose to get post-secondary education. You can either get a certificate or a diploma which are offered in relevant subjects, such as travel sales or tourism at many community colleges and vocational schools.

      Participate in a co-op placement or internship if it is available at your college if you do attend. With this program, you get to shadow an individual in this field and learn the ropes of it. Although you won't be directly involved with the process, you'll get to see how work is done, what you'll be doing and what your schedule will be like.

      Enroll yourself in a second-language course, if you want to. Although this is not required, you are interacting with people from around the world and there will be many languages. The ability to speak a second language is considered a plus by many employers.
