Look for hazardous chemicals in your home--this will show you the extent of the problem. Such chemicals may spontaneously combust, corrode and poison the earth, or be accidentally ingested by children or pets.

Avoid buying unnecessary chemicals when a natural or green product will do the job. Create your own compost pile by using fruit and vegetable scraps, dead leaves, coffee grounds and grass clippings. This will mean less garbage in a landfill and the homemade compost is a great substitute for toxic fertilizers. You can also use it instead of potting soil or as mulch.

Many shelters, agencies, and schools can use these products. They contain components of lead, copper, zinc, antimony and nickel that are hazardous when improperly disposed.
