How to Create Your Own Silk Screen
Silk screens are a tool that are used in the art of silk screening, which is a process that many people use to make T-shirts at home. Silk screening is an art form that uses a frame with silk stretched across, then sections are blocked off to create an image with pigments that seep through the silk holes. Before embarking on such a project, first you will need a silk screen. With just a few simple steps, you can be on your way to creating your own unique T-shirts and art projects.
Things You'll Need
- 2-by-3-foot lumber
- Plywood
- Clamp hinges
- 1/4-inch plate glass
- Duct tape
- 3-inch-thick foam rubber
- Hook and eye latches
- Electric drill and bits
- Wood screws
- 200-mesh nylon
- Upholstery stapler

From the 2-by-3-foot lumber, you will horizontally cut four pieces---two pieces will be 11 inches long and two will be 8 1/2-inches long. Screw these together in a rectangular format with the long wooden screws.

Cut a piece of the thick foam and place it inside your frame, leaving a 1/2-inch space between the frame and the foam.

Cut a piece of plywood that is 13 inches by 26 inches and center your frame in the middle. Attach a set of the clamp hinges to one side of your frame, so that it opens and closes with the foam underneath. On the opposite side, attach the eye hook and a latch. Duct tape around all of the edges.

Cut a piece of mesh nylon that is two inches larger than your frame. Wet the nylon and stretch it over the frame, staple it on with an upholstery stapler. This step can be tricky, but it will just take some manipulation of the nylon and frame until you have it stretched correctly.
