1
Determine the image resolution in megapixels that the camera can take. The megapixels determine how sharp and clear the image will be when it is printed. The greater the number of megapixels, the larger the image you can print at a good quality.

2
Assess the type and amount of zoom the digital camera features. Digital camera zoom is expressed in both optical and digital measurements. The optical zoom is the more important of the two, as it represents how much the camera will enlarge an object while still maintaining clarity. Digital zoom will take over after the optical zoom reaches its limit, but the more you digitally zoom in on an object, the less clear and sharp it becomes. The zoom of a camera is measured in terms of how many times larger the camera will enlarge an object. For example, a 3x zoom will make an image appear three times larger than the original image appears.

See what type of storage card the digital camera uses for saving photographs and video. Cameras will often have initials associated with them such as "SD" or "CF." These initials describe the type of storage card the camera uses to store the pictures after you take them. Although there are several types of cards, two of the most popular are the Compact Flash (CF) card and the Secure Digital (SD) card. Many new digital cameras require you to buy a memory card after purchase of the camera maximize the quantity of photographs and movies that you can store on the camera.

Determine the type of batteries that the camera uses. Some cameras will use "AA," non-rechargeable batteries while others will have a rechargeable battery that comes with the camera along with a charger. If you purchase a camera that uses "AA" batteries, then you may want to purchase a separate, rechargeable "AA" battery set and charger.
