How to Choose Cladding & Siding Colors
With new techniques for creating cladding and siding for a home, it may seem overwhelming to pick out a color. However, you can narrow down your ideas to a manageable number in just a couple of steps. The color and possibly the texture of the exterior of your home don't usually get changed very often, and there are a wide variety of options to choose from. For instance, you can completely change the look of your house by having a rock facade installed or by changing the direction of the siding. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Drive through different neighborhoods to see what other people have chosen for their siding. Pay special attention to the colors and textures that are popular on your street and in your immediate neighborhood.
-
2
Talk to friends and neighbors who have had their siding redone in the last few years. That way you can find out who they used and what tips they have to offer. This is one way to find a contractor to do the work for you or, in some cases, who not to use. Visit home improvement showrooms to gather brochures on the various products that are available.

Go through the brochures. Make notes of what appeals to you and cross out what does not. Do this fairly quickly on your first time through, just using a gut reaction. This can save a lot of time later.

4
Take the color of your roof into consideration. For instance, if you have a lighter colored roof, such as tan, you would not want to pair that with a dark colored siding. If you are replacing your roof at the same time as your siding, then you can better coordinate the two.
-
5
Figure in the style of your home when choosing colors. For instance, neutral, natural colors enhance an American Craftsman style of house, while blues, purples and pinks are suitable for a Victorian style. This is also true when choosing a contrasting trim color. Use a strong contrast in colors for making a bold statement, or pair complementary colors to blend more naturally.

6
Look at samples of siding or cladding outside at different times of the day to see which ones you like best. Shades will appear different depending on sun location and other factors. Many places that sell and install siding will give you samples to take home.
