How to Make Cinnamon Milk

Start to finish: 10 minutes

Servings: 2

Difficulty: Beginner

There are few things as comforting as clutching a favorite mug filled with warm milk. Adding cinnamon and just a hint of vanilla makes an even more flavorful beverage you can relax with and sip slowly before bedtime.

  • 2 cups dairy or nondairy milk
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, or 2 to 3 pieces of cinnamon bark
  • 4 drops real vanilla extract
  • Sweetener, to taste

In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the milk and the cinnamon sticks or bark to a simmer -- when the milk produces small bubbles and a little bit of steam. Simmering happens quickly, so don't walk away from the pan.

Remove the pan from heat and cover it with a lid for about 3 to 4 minutes, which gives the cinnamon sticks time to release flavor.

Pour the milk into two 8-ounce mugs. Place one of the cinnamon sticks in each cup.

Add two drops of real vanilla, plus sweetener to taste, to each mug, and stir.

Serve the cinnamon milk while it's still warm.

    • Use sweeteners like honey, agave syrup, brown sugar or raw sugar to enhance the taste of your subtly spicy milk.
    • You could add sweetener to the saucepan instead. However, when serving two, adding it to the cups individually allows you to choose different sweeteners and customize the amounts.

Instead of using cinnamon sticks, sprinkle just a dash of powdered cinnamon into the milk before heating.

For a more robust flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice to the saucepan along with the cinnamon sticks. Strain the milk into the cups, and drop in the cinnamon sticks. Add vanilla and sweetener before serving.

For a spicier version of cinnamon milk, break off a piece of star anise and add it to the heating milk along with the cinnamon sticks.

For an even quicker, simpler version of cinnamon milk, heat a cup of milk in the microwave and steep a cinnamon tea bag in it for 2 to 3 minutes. Boost the flavor with vanilla and sweetener to taste.
