How to Confirm Internet Speed

Internet speed is one feature that Internet service providers promise when trying to gain new customers. There are several different types of Internet connections from slowest to fastest, including dial-up, DSL and cable. As an Internet subscriber, it is sometimes difficult to know whether your actual service is performing to the promised speeds of your service provider. You can confirm your speed using an Internet speed test and compare your results to typical Internet speeds.

Instructions

      Go to a website that allows you test your Internet speeds. McAfee offers a free Internet speed test (see Resources).

      Click on the the "Click here to test now" link located near the middle of the page. The Internet speed test will take a few seconds to complete.

      Write down your results that are displayed in the speedometer. It should be displayed in MBPS or megabytes per second. This measurement indicates how fast your Internet download speed is.

      Compare your results to common Internet speeds. Velocity Guide (see Resources) is a website that provides you with the standard speeds for a variety of Internet connections. Find your Internet connection type from the chart and compare it to the result that you previously wrote down.

Tips & Warnings

  • Call your Internet service provider if your connection is considerably slower than the standard speeds presented on the Velocity Guide chart.
