How to Clean Ceramic Molds

Clean ceramic molds produce greenware with no imperfections or debris embedded in the slip. Use caution when caring for the ceramic molds as any damage incurred to the mold will transfer to the ceramic piece. The molds should be cleaned after every use and stored banded and upside down to keep insects and dust from collecting in the mold.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any excess slip caught in crevices of the design by blowing hard onto the dirty section of the ceramic mold. Avoid using canned air or any other forced-air system to blow away dirt and debris from the inside of a ceramic mold. Using even short blasts could permanently embed debris into the plaster of the mold, causing deformities in the finished product. Also, do not yield to the temptation to scrape the debris from the mold, as this will only scratch the mold.

    • 2

Allow any wet slip stuck on the inside of the ceramic mold to dry slightly for easier removal. As the slip dries, it shrinks, making it easier to remove.

    • 3

Brush away dust and debris with a soft bristle brush. Although not made for ceramics, a large cosmetics brush works well for cleaning a ceramic mold.

    • 4

Clear away stubborn dirt and debris with a soft sponge dampened with clean water. Use small pieces of the sponge to keep moisture exposure to a minimum. Wet molds must be completely dried before they are used again.
