How to Crochet Cap Hats
If you can crochet in the round, you can make a cap-style crocheted hat. Simply crochet the hat to fit the wearer, then add a cap at the end. Crochet your cap using two strands of worsted-weight yarn held together and a size-J hook to make sure it is cozy and has a sturdy brim. Use any type of yarn in a single color or mix two colors for a variegated look.

1
Make a crocheted circle for the beginning of the hat, and increase the circle until the hat measures just slightly smaller than the circumference of the wearer's head. Start with six stitches, then make two stitches in every stitch on the second round to get to 12 stitches total. On the following round, make one stitch in the first stitch and two in the next. Continue to increase in this manner until the circle reaches the desired circumference.

2
Crochet evenly in the round until the hat reaches its desired height. Make one stitch in each stitch from the previous row, and continue in this manner until the hat comes down to just above the wearer's ears (or just over them, if you want it to keep their ears covered and warm).

Add the cap. Single crochet back and forth across the front stitches of the brim in the back loops only of the first row. Add a second row of single crochet across this, and on the third row, decrease one stitch on each end. Make another row where you decrease on each end, then fasten off and weave in your loose ends.
