How to Make a Miniature Rope Halter
A miniature rope halter is used to lead and tie small livestock such as sheep, goats, small calves, and miniature horses and smaller ponies. According to Dennis Hartman, retired extension dairy scientist at Virginia Tech, rope halters are easy to make, inexpensive and adjustable. The nosepiece loop, the halter loop and the crown knot are common parts of every halter. Producing a utilitarian rope halter requires little more than rope, patience and practice. Kept clean and dry and hung properly when not in use, a rope halter is a durable piece of farm tack.
Things You'll Need
- 8 to 10 feet of 3/8-inch, three-strand manila rope
- Tape measure
- Marker
- Sharp knife or axe
Instructions
-
Nosepiece Loop
-
1
Measure and mark 6 inches from one end of the rope. Untwist the rope to the 6-inch mark.
-
2
Measure and mark 4 more inches and bend the rope over your left index finger at that mark. Have both the untwisted and long rope facing to your right.
-
-
3
Raise the strand on top of the long rope by twisting clockwise with your left thumb. Press the center strand of untwisted rope under the raised strand and away from yourself.
-
4
Raise the strand to the left of where the untwisted strand came out. Use your left thumb and press the top untwisted strand under it and away from yourself.
-
5
Turn the loop over and raise the remaining unused strand on the long rope, the one on the bottom. Use your left thumb to press the untwisted strand under it from the bottom side and away from yourself.
-
6
Pull all three untwisted pieces tight. Braid the remainder of the untwisted rope into the twisted rope by going over one strand and under the next. Pull each untwisted strand tight after putting it under a strand. Cut off the short ends.
Halter Loop
-
7
Measure and mark 16 inches from the end of the loop. Raise two strands at this point and pass the nosepiece loop under the strands and away from yourself. Push it through far enough to make a loop roughly the size of the rope.
-
8
Raise two strands on top of the short rope close to the loop. Pass the long rope under the two strands and away from yourself.
-
9
Pass the long rope through the nosepiece loop. Pass the long rope further through to the second loop to form the halter.
Crown Knot
-
10
Measure and mark 6 inches from the end of the long rope. Unravel the rope to the mark, ending with the center strand on the side facing away from you.
-
11
Pull the right strand down with your right hand and hold it under the loose end of the left strand. Pass the end of the right strand through the eye of the first strand. Pull all strands tight at one time to form the crown knot.
-
12
Braid the strands by going over the next strand and under the strand next to that. Continue braiding until all the ends are used up. Cut off the short ends.
