  1. Basic Pointers

    • 1

Update your iPod touch to make sure its software is current--as of Jan. 17, 2010, the latest version is 3.1. Make sure your iTunes software is up-to-date, and connect your iPod touch to your computer using a USB cable. A screen will appear to notify you if there are any available updates for your iPod touch.

    • 2

Use your iPod touch often. According to Apple, the iPod touch's lithium-based battery should undergo a minimum of one charge cycle per month to keep it healthy.

    • 3

Store your iPod touch at the proper temperature. Apple recommends keeping the iPod touch between -4 degrees F to 113 degrees F, and ideally from 32 degrees F to 95 degrees F.

    • 4

Avoid leaving your iPod touch turned on when it is not in use. Tap the on-screen "Pause" symbol to pause music or video. Press the "Sleep/Wake" button to lock the iPod touch and prevent anything from happening if the screen is touched while not in use. Press and hold the "Sleep/Wake" button for a few seconds, and drag the on-screen red slider to turn off the iPod touch.

    • 5

Take your iPod touch out of any protective carrying case if you notice that it becomes hot when charging, as this may affect battery life.

    Adjusting Settings to Conserve Power

    • 6

Turn off Wi-Fi when not accessing data over a network. Go to "Settings," followed by "General Network" and turn Wi-Fi "Off."

    • 7

Minimize the use of the iPod touch screen back light. Under "Settings," you can dim the screen's brightness as well as turn the "Auto-Brightness" feature to "Off."

    • 8

Limit the use of third-party applications, such as games that keep the back light on for extended periods of time and thus, deplete battery life.

    • 9

Fetch mail and other data manually to extend battery life. Go to "Settings," followed by "Fetch New Data" and tap "Manually." Similarly, if you use a push mail account on your iPod touch, only have it on when you need it. Under "Settings," tap "Fetch New Data" and then "Push to Off."

    • 10

Turn off notifications to save battery life. Under "Settings," go to "Notifications" where you can choose to either turn off all notifications or those for a specific application.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to Apple, the iPod touch battery uses a substantial amount of power to fast-forward through playlists. A solution is to create personalized playlists you will be less likely to fast-forward through.

  • Apple also suggests using compressed songs, such as those in AAC or MP3 formats, that are under 9MB in size. This will also prolong the battery life of the iPod touch.

  • Avoid leaving your iPod touch in a hot or cold car, as this may deteriorate the battery's life.
