How to Diagnose Windows Startup Problems

When Windows is first installed, it generally starts quickly when you turn on your PC. But as you add programs and other components to your computer, the original startup time can double or triple. Identifying the cause of Windows startup problems can be tricky, but some basic troubleshooting can give you a starting point for returning your system to its original startup speed.

      Run a full virus scan with your antivirus software. If you are not using antivirus software, download and install a free antivirus scanner, such as Avira AntiVir.

      Run a full antispyware scan with your antispyware software. If you are not using antispyware software, download and install a free antispyware scanner, such as SUPERAntiSpyware.

      Click "Start," click "Run," type "msconfig" in the "Open" field, and click OK to launch the System Configuration Utility. If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, click "Start," type "msconfig" in the "Search programs and files field," and press Enter.

      Click "Selective Startup" on the "General" tab and click to deselect "Load Startup Items." Reboot your computer. If the computer boots quickly, move to Step 3.

      Choose the "Startup" tab in the System Configuration Utility. This list displays all of the programs that are configured to start automatically along with Windows. If you identify a program that is unnecessary, click to deselect it and press OK. Reboot your computer and repeat this process until you find the startup program that is delaying the Windows startup process (if any).
