How to Solder Silver Bangles

Soldering is a technique used for joining two or more metal components, creating joints, and closing rings and bracelets. When applied neatly, solder can create a virtually seamless link between two separate metal parts. Soldering is the ideal means by which to close and complete silver bangles. Handcrafted silver bangles typically have a gap that prevents them from being perfect, closed circles; soldering can permanently close that gap. To solder silver bangles, use the following guidelines:

Things You'll Need

  • Flux

Instructions

  1. Soldering Silver Bangles

    • 1

Soak the bangles in warm pickling solution--an acidic liquid used to clean metals before and after soldering--to remove all dirt, debris and oil, which can prevent the solder from binding to the silver. You can obtain pickle solution from online jewelry vendors such as riogrande.com. Rinse and dry the bangles thoroughly.

    • 2

Position a silver bangle so that the two ends you wish to solder together are pressed as closely together as possible without overlapping. Tie a string around the diameter of the bangle to press the two ends together, if necessary.

    • 3

Apply flux to the seam between the two ends of the bangle where you will place the solder. Use a paintbrush to put the flux precisely where it is needed.

    • 4

Snip a slender piece of silver solder with scissors. Cut a portion of solder just wide and long enough to cover the seam between the two ends of the bangle. Use a bit of 1mm silver solder wire, if possible. Lay the silver solder right over the seam you wish to close.

    • 5

Coat the silver solder with flux.

    • 6

Turn on the propane torch. Heat the silver solder indirectly, without putting the flame right on it. Move the flame back and forth around the solder until it melts.

    • 7

Remove the heat from the solder once it has melted in place. Turn off the propane torch.

    • 8

Allow the solder to solidify and cool. Soak the bangles for several minutes in warm pickling solution to remove any traces of flux.

Tips & Warnings

  • File and sand the bangle as needed to make the solder flush with the metal and create a more uniform, seamless surface.
