How to Train a Yorkie to Fetch a Toy

Yorkshire terriers are little bundles of energy that thrive of excitement and fun. Teaching your Yorkie to fetch a toy and then bring it back to you can stimulate your dog's need for exercise and adventure. Training Yorkies is relatively easy, and if you begin when the dog is still young, you create a bond of respect between you and your Yorkie that will endure throughout your master and canine relationship.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your dog to her leash and ask her to "sit."

    • 2

Choose one of your dog's favorite toys and kneel down to show him the toy. If it is a squeaking toy, squeak the toy a few times to get the dog excited.

    • 3

Show the dog the toy in your hand and then toss it a few feet after standing up. Make sure you don't toss it out of the range of the leash, otherwise the dog won't be able to retrieve it.

    • 4

Use a firm voice to command your dog to "Fetch." Allow her to chase after the toy.

    • 5

Return to a kneeling position, taking a treat in your hand. Show the dog the treat and encourage it to come back with the toy. You may need to gently draw the dog back toward you with the leash if he doesn't immediately respond. Do not pull the dog against his will, but gently guide him back.

    • 6

Command the dog to let go of the toy by saying, "Drop it!" Once she has dropped the toy, reward her with a treat.

    • 7

Praise your Yorkie to let him know you approve. Praise will encourage him to repeat the activity.
